What's with "U Map NY"?

Newsday and Common Cause posted a website that was supposed to help the people map legislative districts. Let's see whether it worked.

What we saw

This error message appeared: "Silverlight application storage is disabled." Yet in Silverlight's window, the "Enable application storage" box was checked.

This is how one page looked:

Only the top of the map is visible.

On the Internet Explorer 8 browser, only the top of the map was visible. The "Overview" was only visible to halfway through County Legislative Districts, with no way to scroll down to see the rest of the list. (City and town council districts were ignored.)

The map would not stay still. Instead of remaining on a portion of Long Island, it kept moving until it reached either the North or South Pole.

"Draw your map" and "start with a blank map" radio buttons led to a district view with no district numbers listed.

Adding Common Cause's set of district lines produced this page:

Only the top of the map is visible.

The registration of the districts was visibly offset from the map of background features.

It was impossible to place district lines along community lines that were straddled by carelessly-placed existing election districts, as between Elmont and Franklin Square, between East Meadow and East Garden City, between Bethpage and Plainview, between Syosset and Oyster Bay Cove, between Melville and West Hills, between Dix Hills and South Huntington, between Brentwood and Central Islip, between Nesconset and Hauppauge, between Islandia and Lake Hills, between Port Jefferson Station and Mount Sinai, and between Medford and Yaphank. (As you must be aware, choosing precise boundaries is sometimes necessary to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act.)

There seemed to be no way to move district numbers if they wound up being cut out of their respective districts.
